Surfr was dark for years, which is lovely on the sofa on a winter evening and much less lovely on a beach in full sun with wet hands. So Surfr now has a light theme, and you pick which one you want.

The three options
Light
Bright background, dark text. The one to use in daylight. If you have ever tried to read your session stats on the beach at midday, this is the fix.
Dark
Dark background, light text. Easier at night and in the evening, and what Surfr has always looked like.
System
Follows your phone. Set your phone to switch automatically at sunset and Surfr goes with it, no thinking required.
Which one you have now
If you have been using Surfr a while, nothing changed. You are still on dark, exactly as before, and you will have seen a one-time note telling you light mode exists. Ignore it and nothing happens.
If you installed Surfr recently, you started on light, because it matches what most apps do now.
Either way it is three taps to change, and changing it does not affect anything else.
On your watch
The theme setting is for the phone app. Your watch keeps its own dark display, and that is on purpose. A watch face has to be readable in bright sun at a glance with salt water on it, and dark with high contrast wins that every time. It also uses noticeably less battery on an OLED screen, which matters more on a five hour session than it does on your phone.
If something looks wrong in light mode
Dark mode had a long head start, so if you find text in the light mode that is hard to read, an icon that has vanished into the background, or a screen that clearly was not expecting a white background, then please report it to us as a bug, we would like to see it.
Profile → Report a bug, and please include a screenshot and which screen you were on. A screenshot is worth far more than a description here, because the problem is almost always a specific colour on a specific element.
