Wind and Wind Alerts

Wind is at the heart of every session. Surfr brings together live data, forecasts, and smart insights to help you make better decisions before and during your ride.

Understanding the wind helps you to choose the right spot, pick the right gear & ride at the right time.

Wind data is integrated across the app:

  • Discover: Plan your session with maps, forecasts, and history

  • Spot pages: Get detailed local conditions

  • Session details: See the wind during your ride

📊 Types of wind data

Surfr combines multiple types of wind information:

Live wind

  • Real-time measurements from weather stations

  • Shows what’s happening right now

Forecast

  • Predicts upcoming conditions

  • Available in hourly intervals (1h / 3h)

  • Helps you plan ahead

Wind history

  • Shows past conditions

  • Useful to understand how the day developed

The wind map gives you a visual overview of conditions:

  • Toggle between wind speed and gusts

  • Switch between different weather models

  • Navigate through time to see changes

  • Get a quick overview of conditions across regions

🎯 Smart wind tools

Surfr helps you turn data into decisions:

  • Kite size recommendations based on wind and your weight

  • Condition indicator for a quick session overview

  • Sunrise and sunset times

🔔 Wind Alerts

Never miss the perfect session. Set a Wind Alert and get notified when the wind matches your preferences.

  1. Go to Discover

  2. Select your preferred spot

  3. Tap the bel icon top right to Set Wind Alert.

  4. Choose your preferred weather model (ECMWF, ICON, or GFS)

  5. Set a minimum wind speed using the + / – controls

  6. Decide how you want to be notified

You’ll receive a push notification by default, with the option to also get alerts by email. You can manage your alerts anytime from your Profile → Settings → Wind Alerts.

💡 Surfr checks forecasts every 3 hours and will notify you when the wind exceeds your selected threshold, up to 5 days in advance.
