Choosing what Surfr notifies you about

The notification categories, how to mute a single rider, why friends' sessions are grouped, and what to check if your notifications stopped.

Surfr has a lot to tell you. Your friends are going live, someone liked your session, the wind is turning at your spot, you climbed the leaderboard. All of it is worth knowing at some point. Not all of it is worth a buzz on your wrist at seven in the morning.

You decide what you want.

⚙️ Where - Profile → Settings → Notifications

🛟 Safety always comes through - Safety alerts cannot be switched off. If someone needs help, or you do, that reaches you.

📱 Your in-app list keeps everything - Turning off a notification stops the interruption. It does not hide anything. It is all still in your notifications list when you look in the app later.

What you can turn on and off

About you

  • Leaderboard

  • Stokes and rewards

Email, separately from push

Email has its own two switches, so you can keep the email and drop the push, or the other way round:

  • Leaderboard results your result when a leaderboard closes

  • Your sessions imports and video exports when they finish

Receipts, security codes and anything about your account will always be sent, no matter what you choose in the email notifications.

If you unsubscribed from leaderboard emails through a link at the bottom of one, that is the same switch. Turn it back on here and the emails resume.

Always on

  • Safety alerts when someone raises an alert

  • Account security and account changes

  • Recording reminders when a session is still recording

Recording reminders cannot be switched off. A session left recording drains your battery and loses the ride, so the one warning that prevents that always reaches you. It fires at 15 minutes, at 30 minutes, and then every half hour until you stop the recording.

Wind alerts are set up per spot and per condition, so they live with your wind alerts rather than here. There is a link straight to them from the same screen, and Wind and Wind Alerts explains how they work.

Muting one person, not a whole category

Sometimes you want the notifications, but just not from one particular rider. Someone posting six sessions a day is a ´good problem´ for them and a lot of buzzing for you.

Notifications → Muted riders. They will never know, and you still see everything they post in the app. It only stops the push notifications, so their activity still appears in your notifications list.

Why you get fewer notifications about friends' sessions than they post

If someone posts three sessions in a day, you get one notification, not three.

This is deliberate, and it applies to everyone whether or not you have changed any settings. A rider on a good day used to be able to fill your lock screen on their own. Now the first session tells you they are out, and the rest are waiting in the app when you look.

All three sessions are still in your notifications list, and still on their profile. Only the interruption is grouped.

Notifications stopped completely? - Troubleshoot here

Work through these in order:

  1. Check your phone's settings first. iOS and Android can block Surfr's notifications entirely, and nothing in the app can override that. iPhone: Settings → Notifications → Surfr. Android: Settings → Apps → Surfr → Notifications

  2. Check Focus, Do Not Disturb, or a sleep schedule. These silence notifications without turning them off, so the app looks broken when it is not

  3. Check the Notifications screen in Surfr for anything switched off

  4. Check Muted riders in case a specific person is muted rather than a category

  5. Check you are signed in on the right account

Still nothing? Profile → Report a bug, and say which notification you expected and roughly when. That is far more useful than "notifications not working", because it lets us look up the exact send.
