Session modes: Big Air, Speed & Downwinder (Garmin)

What the session modes do and how to pick the right one on your Garmin.

Surfr for Garmin now has a mode for every kind of session. You choose your mode in the mode selector on the watch before you hit start.

Big Air

The classic mode for jump sessions. It tracks your jumps, max height, airtime and more.

Speed (new)

Built for speed runs. Focuses on your speed stats so you can chase your top and average numbers.

Downwinder (new)

For point-to-point riding. Shows your progression live on your wrist. Distance covered, distance to the next beach and distance to your destination. See Downwinder mode.

ℹ️ Speed is free forever. Big Air needs Surfr Plus after your 5 free trial sessions, and Downwinder needs Surfr PRO — your free trial sessions let you try both, and Surfr Plus riders get 3 downwinder sessions before Downwinder asks for PRO. See Surfr 4 on your Garmin — what's free, what's Surfr Plus, and the Legacy app.

💡 Downwinder mode isn't available on a few memory-limited watches — see the Garmin Compatibility List — Surfr 4.0.
