How to improve battery life on Apple Watch

Updated this week

If you’re using Surfr on Apple Watch and notice battery drain, it’s natural to assume the app is the cause. In most cases, it’s how your Watch is connecting to the internet.

The Biggest Battery Factor: Your Network Connection

The single biggest drain on Apple Watch battery is its network radio. Especially cellular.

  • Cellular uses a lot of power

  • Wi-Fi connections also add overhead

  • These run independently when your Watch is on its own

So when your Apple Watch is used without your iPhone nearby, it has to do all the heavy lifting itself and that’s where most battery drain comes from.

When Your iPhone Is Nearby

When your iPhone is within range, Apple Watch switches to a much more efficient mode:

  • Your Watch does not use its own cellular

  • It avoids active Wi-Fi usage

  • It sends data to your iPhone using low-power Bluetooth

  • Your iPhone handles all internet requests and sends results back

Why this matters

👉 Your Watch turns off its most power-hungry components
👉 Only energy-efficient Bluetooth is used

👉 This results in a massive battery improvement.

What We Recommend

For the best battery performance:

  • Keep your iPhone nearby when using Surfr on Apple Watch (for example in a waterproof pouch under your wetsuit)

  • This allows your Watch to use Bluetooth instead of cellular

  • You’ll get significantly longer battery life
