To get the new features, update Surfr on your Garmin and redo the one-time calibration. It only takes a minute.
1. Update the app
Open the Connect IQ store (in Garmin Connect, or on your watch)
Find Surfr and tap Update
Wait for the update to sync to your watch
2. Redo the calibration
Open Surfr on your watch
Go through the calibration step in the watch menu
This takes about a minute and only needs to be done once after updating
3. Go ride
You're set. On most watches there's no more pre-session wrist flick — just open the app, hit start and ride.
What happened to the wrist flick?
On the previous app you shook your wrist before every session so Surfr could align the watch's motion sensors. Without that alignment, jump heights and airtime drift.
On Surfr 4 that is handled for you. When you start a Big Air or Downwinder session the alignment screen still appears, but it clears on its own after about a second and your jump view takes over. Nothing to do.
My watch still asks for the flick
Some watches don't report the sensor timing Surfr needs to align by itself, so they still ask. If you see the prompt:
Shake your wrist back and forth a few times — the animation on screen shows the movement
The screen clears as soon as you're aligned, and recording carries on
You can do it anywhere — on the beach, in the parking lot, right before you ride. It costs a few seconds and it is what keeps your heights accurate.
ℹ️ On The Surfr. App - Legacy the wrist flick is still required before every session — that app is unchanged.
