My device stopped recording while tracking a session

Updated over 2 months ago

Nothing’s more frustrating than finishing an epic session only to find out your device stopped recording! 😩

We’ll walk you through troubleshooting tips per device to make your Surfr app running smoothly.

🛟 If your session wasn't recorded properly, we're sorry to tell you that unfortunately there is no way for us to recover your session.

⌚️ Apple Watch

If your Apple Watch app unexpectedly closes or returns to the main watch face, it’s likely due to Apple’s security feature that activates when the watch detects it’s no longer being worn. This happens if you remove the watch or wear it over a wetsuit, as it can’t detect contact with your skin. While the app may close, Surfr can still record data in the background. Resolutions to avoid this from happening:

  1. Wear the Watch Directly on Your Skin: This ensures that the watch maintains contact with your wrist, preventing the security feature from activating.

  2. Disable the Passcode: Removing the passcode bypasses this security feature, but do consider the potential security risks before doing so.

⌚️ Android Watch

If your Android watch stops recording during sessions, adjusting these two settings should help prevent it from happening again:

  1. Always On. Open the Surfr app on your watch, go to Settings, and enable Always On. This keeps the screen active, which may use a bit more battery but greatly improves the app’s stability.

  2. Waterlock. If you’re using a watch like the Pixel Watch, enable Auto Waterlock to prevent accidental touches from water and ensure the Surfr app stays in the foreground. On the Galaxy Watch, you can activate Samsung Waterlock from the swipe-down menu.

📱 iPhone

If you're using your iPhone in a waterproof pouch, make sure to lock your screen and wear the screen outward to avoid accidental screen touches which could cause the app to stop recording (or butt-dialing someone mid session).

📱 Android Phone

A common issue with Android phones is that the Surfr app gets shut down by certain operating systems, especially on Chinese brands like Xiaomi, Huawei, OnePlus and Oppo. These phones have particularly aggressive battery-saving settings that can interfere with app performance.

We've got two simple solutions to make sure your Surfr app runs smoothly on your Android Phone. We recommend starting with Solution 1. If that doesn’t work, then try Solution 2 as a backup.

  1. Disable all battery saving features. Have a look at detailed instructions for your phone here or install the Don'tKillMyApp app.

  2. Keep the screen on by pinning the app. This locks Surfr on your screen, and you can only exit it by pressing a special button combo. Not sure how to do this? Just Google: How to pin an app on [Your Phone Brand]
