Missing jumps or a frozen watch when playing music on your Garmin

Playing music on your Garmin watch (Spotify, including downloaded playlists) while recording with Surfr can stop jumps from being counted or freeze the watch. What's going on and what you can do for now.

Heads up, Garmin riders: when music plays on the watch itself while Surfr is recording, Surfr can stop working properly. We're investigating this issue.

What you might notice

  • The session timer keeps running, but no jumps are counted

  • Speed or GPS stops updating during the session

  • The watch freezes or reboots when you try to stop the session

  • After a reboot, the watch shows a paused activity (for example a "Run") that you never started

So far we've seen this on the fēnix 7, the fēnix 8 (including Solar) and the Forerunner 970, with Spotify playing to Bluetooth headphones. Downloaded (offline) playlists trigger it too, so switching to offline music doesn't help.

What you can do for now

  • Ride without music playing on the watch

  • If you want music, try playing it from your phone instead of the watch

  • If the watch reboots and offers to continue a paused activity, save that activity and start a new Surfr session instead. The recovered activity doesn't record jumps.

  • Keep Surfr and your watch firmware up to date

ℹ️ We know riding with music is one of the reasons many of you ride with a Garmin, so this isn't the final answer. We'll update this article when we know more.

Still having problems without music?
