Inaccurate or Missing Jump Detection on Garmin Fenix 6 Devices

Overview

We’ve received multiple reports regarding accuracy issues and missing jumps, particularly from users of the Garmin Fenix 6 (all models).

After further investigation, we’ve identified that this issue is related to how the device’s internal sensors are configured.

What’s causing the issue?

Our app relies on two key sensors in your watch:

  • Accelerometer

  • Gyroscope

On Fenix 6 devices, these sensors are not synchronized:

  • The gyroscope sends data at a much higher frequency

  • The accelerometer updates less frequently

This mismatch prevents proper sensor fusion (combining both data streams accurately), which is essential for detecting jumps. As a result, jump detection may be inaccurate or completely missing—both during live sessions and after syncing.

Can this be fixed?

Unfortunately, this is a hardware/firmware limitation specific to how Garmin has configured the sensors on these devices.

Because of this, we’re unable to resolve the issue from our side.

Recommended workaround

You can still use Surfr AI only mode:

  • Do the compatibility test from the settings within Surfr for you to show AI Compatible

  • Record your session as usual

  • Sync your watch with your mobile device

  • View accurate jump heights in the app after syncing

What can you do?

If you’re affected, we strongly recommend contacting Garmin Support:

  • Report the issue

  • Mention sensor synchronization problems on Fenix 6 devices

The more users report this, the higher the chance Garmin will investigate and potentially improve this in future updates.
